His 2001 season was 20-6 with a 3.80 earned run average, 232 innings and five complete games, and he walked 41 batters all year. Control was the whole method: he threw strikes at the bottom of the zone and let people hit them, and in fourteen seasons he walked 1.9 men per nine innings.
Fourteen seasons gave him 131 wins against 124, a 4.27 earned run average, 2,198 innings and 1,553 strikeouts. Elbow reconstruction cost him 2003, and the Yankees signed him during the rehabilitation and got 14 wins in 2004 and two postseason starts.
Pittsburgh drafted him and traded him to Chicago for Brant Brown in 1998, which the Cubs won. He was an All-Star in 2001. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
