John Olerud Marquee

b. August 5, 1968 · Toronto Blue Jays 1989–1996, New York Mets 1997–1999, Seattle Mariners 2000–2004, New York Yankees 2004, Boston Red Sox 2005

In 1993 he hit .363, the best average in the American League, with 200 hits, 54 doubles and 114 walks, and was over .400 into August. Toronto won the World Series that year and the year before, and he was the first baseman for both.

He wore his batting helmet on defense because of a brain aneurysm that burst while he was a college pitcher at Washington State in 1989 and nearly killed him. He never pitched again and never played in the minor leagues either: Toronto drafted him that June and he was in the major leagues by September.

Seventeen seasons gave him 2,239 hits, 500 doubles, 255 home runs, 1,275 walks and a .295 average, with three Gold Gloves at first base. He hit .354 for the Mets in 1998, which is still the club record for a season. The 2011 ballot gave him four votes of 581.
