Joe Quinn Marquee

b. December 24, 1862 · St. Louis Maroons 1884–1886, Boston Beaneaters 1888–1889, 1891–1892, Boston Reds 1890, St. Louis Browns 1893–1896, 1898, Baltimore Orioles 1896–1898, Cleveland Spiders 1899, St. Louis Cardinals 1900, Cincinnati Reds 1900, Washington Senators 1901

He came from Sydney as a boy and played seventeen seasons, which no other Australian-born player has approached: 1,804 hits, 228 doubles, 800 runs batted in, 270 stolen bases and a .262 average, with 1,307 games at second base.

In 1899 the owners of the Cleveland Spiders moved every good player on the club to St. Louis and left the rest to play out the season. Quinn was made manager in midseason and went 12-104. The Spiders finished 20-134, which is still the worst record any major-league club has had, and the National League folded them that winter.

He played on the Boston clubs that won pennants in 1891 and 1892 and on Baltimore's champions of 1896, and he was an undertaker in St. Louis in the off-seasons and for the rest of his life. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1940, at seventy-seven.
