He batted .285 with 111 hits for Baltimore in 1989, then collected another 111 hits the following year. Across those two seasons he struck out 83 times in 803 at bats, a compact illustration of how regularly he put the ball in play. He also appeared in 28 games at first base.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,173 hits, 186 doubles, 37 triples, 57 home runs, 405 runs batted in, 318 walks, 93 stolen bases and a .273 average across 1,253 games in the outfield. He finished sixth in the 1985 Rookie of the Year voting with Pittsburgh before Baltimore claimed him.

He played for five clubs and finished with Montreal in 1997 at thirty-five. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
