Houston had him at second base for nine seasons and traded him to Cincinnati after 1971. He weighed 160 pounds, drew more walks than any player but four, and led the National League in walks four times. He also won a Gold Glove in each season from 1973 through 1977.

The Reds won 108 games in 1975 and 102 in 1976 and took the World Series in both, and he was the league's Most Valuable Player both times. In 1975 he hit .327 with 132 walks, 67 stolen bases, 94 runs batted in, and 107 runs scored. In 1976 he hit 27 home runs, more than in any other season.

He returned to Houston in 1980 and closed out with San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Oakland. The totals are 2,517 hits, 268 home runs, 1,650 runs, and 689 stolen bases, eleventh on the career list. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1990 on the first ballot, and he spent the decades afterward in a national broadcast booth.
