He walked 147 times in 1911 and scored 121 runs, both the most in the National League, and walked 122 more the following year. Nobody had ever drawn that many in a season; Babe Ruth was the next man past it, with 150 in 1920. Seventeen seasons gave him 1,135 walks against a .274 average, which is the whole argument for him.

He stole 77 bases in 1899 and 67 in 1903, leading the league both times, hit 19 triples in 1901 and led with nine home runs in 1903. His 1901 season for Brooklyn — 196 hits, 11 home runs, 104 runs batted in — was the biggest of his career, and he was twenty-two.

Chicago traded for him in 1906 and he played left field for four pennant winners and the championships of 1907 and 1908, in an outfield that did not have to hit much because the pitching allowed two runs a game. He was struck by a car in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and died in January 1947, at sixty-eight. Three ballots gave him one vote each.
