Jerry Mumphrey Marquee

b. September 9, 1952 · St. Louis Cardinals 1974–1979, San Diego Padres 1980, New York Yankees 1981–1983, Houston Astros 1983–1985, Chicago Cubs 1986–1988

He was a switch-hitting center fielder who could run: 52 stolen bases and 168 hits for San Diego in 1980, at twenty-seven, in the only season anyone gave him a full year at the top of an order.

The Yankees traded for him and he hit .307 for the 1981 club that won the pennant, then .300 the following year and made the All-Star team. Houston got him in 1983 and he hit .290 with 152 hits in 1984.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,442 hits, 217 doubles, 174 stolen bases and a .289 average, with 1,386 games in the outfield for five clubs. He finished with the Cubs at thirty-five. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
