Jerry Morales Marquee

b. February 18, 1949 · San Diego Padres 1969–1973, Chicago Cubs 1974–1977, 1981–1983, St. Louis Cardinals 1978, Detroit Tigers 1979, New York Mets 1980

San Diego signed him out of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, at seventeen and brought him up at twenty. Chicago traded for him in 1974 and got four good years: 15 home runs and 82 runs batted in that season, then 156 hits and 91 runs batted in in 1975, and an All-Star selection in 1977.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,173 hits, 199 doubles, 95 home runs, 570 runs batted in and a .259 average, with 1,256 games in the outfield. He caught fly balls basket-style, the way Willie Mays did, which announcers mentioned every time.

St. Louis, Detroit and the Mets had him in three consecutive seasons at the end, and then Chicago took him back for three more as a bench player. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
