Born December 23, 1942
Appleton, MN, USA
He won the second and fifth games of the 1969 World Series for the Mets, a club that had never finished above ninth in its seven previous seasons, and was on the mound for the last out of the fifth. He was 17-9 that year behind Tom Seaver, and the two of them are most of why that team is remembered.
Nineteen seasons gave him 222 wins against 209, 2,556 strikeouts — 35th all-time — 3,839 innings and a 3.36 earned run average, with 140 complete games and 33 shutouts. He won 21 games for the Mets in 1976 and 20 for Minnesota in 1979, after they traded him there.
Two All-Star selections in nineteen years, which for that record is few. The writers gave him four votes of 443 in 1991 and dropped him after one ballot; a Veterans Committee looked at him in 2007.
