He was Rookie of the Year in 2004 for Pittsburgh with 25 of the 32 first-place votes, the first Canadian to win it. In 2009, with Boston, he hit 36 home runs, drove in 119 and drew 94 walks, and won a Silver Slugger.
The Mets signed him for four years that winter. He hit .259 with six home runs in 2010, ran into the left-field wall at Dodger Stadium in July with a concussion that ended his season, and was released in 2012 having hit 26 home runs in three years for them.
Eleven seasons gave him 1,200 hits, 222 home runs, 754 runs batted in, 636 walks and a .266 average, with three All-Star selections. He was from Trail, British Columbia, and was drafted in the twenty-second round. The 2019 ballot gave him no votes.
