Detroit had him for fourteen seasons and used him hard: nine times he made 34 starts or more for the Tigers. Morris won 162 games from 1980 through 1989, more than any other pitcher in those ten years, and 254 in all, with 175 complete games. He led the American League in strikeouts in 1983, in shutouts in 1986, and in wins twice.

He threw a no-hitter in the first week of the 1984 season, beating the White Sox 4-0, and Detroit won the World Series that October. Minnesota signed him for 1991 and he was named the most valuable player of that World Series. He moved on to Toronto and won again in 1992 — three titles with three clubs.

His 3.90 career ERA is the highest of any pitcher in the Hall of Fame, and that figure was the case against him. The writers considered him fifteen times, from 2000 through 2014, and never elected him. A veterans committee did it in 2018, twenty-four years after his last game.
