He hit .313 across fifteen seasons with 1,631 hits, 136 home runs and 587 walks, and led the National League with 27 home runs in 1924 and 86 walks in 1925, when he drove in 130. He hit .350 for the 1921 Cardinals and .343 for the 1925 Robins.

The fielding is the reason the career looks the way it does. He led the league's first basemen in errors repeatedly, and managers moved him to the outfield and back and sat him against certain clubs; Branch Rickey traded him at thirty rather than keep watching.

He was of French-Canadian descent, from Michigan, and was among the better left-handed hitters of the 1920s in a decade full of them. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1973, at eighty.
