Jack Clark Marquee

b. November 10, 1955 · San Francisco Giants 1975–1984, St. Louis Cardinals 1985–1987, New York Yankees 1988, San Diego Padres 1989–1990, Boston Red Sox 1991–1992

He drew 1,262 walks against 1,826 hits and led the National League in them three times, which in the 1980s was regarded as a curiosity rather than a skill. Eighteen seasons gave him 340 home runs, 1,180 runs batted in and a .267 average, with four All-Star selections and two Silver Sluggers.

His 1987 season for St. Louis is the one to look at: 35 home runs and 106 runs batted in from 131 games, with 136 walks. The club reached the World Series and he missed it injured. He was called Jack the Ripper and pitchers stopped throwing to him, which is what the walk totals record.

He played for five clubs and left most of them badly. The writers gave him seven votes of 473 in 1998 and he came off the ballot after one appearance, which the measures that value walks have since made look like an error.
