He reached San Francisco in 1958, the first player from the Dominican Republic to hold a regular job in the major leagues, and 2,101 hits followed across seventeen seasons: 206 home runs, 359 doubles and a .286 average, with three All-Star selections. He led the National League with 218 hits and 122 runs in 1966 and with 210 hits in 1968.
His brothers Matty Alou and Jesús Alou both played, and in September 1963 the three of them filled the San Francisco outfield at the same time, which no other set of brothers has done. His son Moisés Alou played seventeen seasons, four of them for Felipe in Montreal.
He managed the Expos from 1992 to 2001 and San Francisco from 2003, taking a club with the lowest payroll in the league to 94 wins in 1993 and the best record in baseball in 1994 when the strike ended the season, and 100 wins with the Giants in 2003. The 1980 ballot gave him three votes of 385.
