He walked 149 times in 1949 and 122 in 1952 and finished with 1,043 against 1,339 hits, which is a ratio that the 1940s regarded as a failure to swing and the modern game regards as the point. He hit .239 and scored 874 runs.

Seventeen seasons gave him 134 home runs and two All-Star selections. Cincinnati gave up on him at twenty-six and Connie Mack signed him at thirty, after a season in the minor leagues, and got eight years of a shortstop who hit 20 home runs three times.

He managed the Athletics in their last season in Philadelphia, in 1954, and lost 103 games. He wore glasses on the field, which infielders of that period did not. He died in 2011, at ninety-four. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
