Colorado took him fifth overall in 2010 and traded him to Cleveland the same winter along with three others for Ubaldo Jiménez, one of the more lopsided prospect trades of the decade. Oakland got him after that and made him a starter; San Diego traded for him in 2014 and he made the All-Star team there in 2016 before being traded again, to Boston, that July.
Boston used him as a starter for three years — 17-6 with a 3.32 earned run average in 2016 — and then his career changed shape again: elbow trouble, four clubs in five years, and by 2019 he was a left-handed reliever getting one batter out at a time.
Fourteen seasons have given him 50 wins, 10 saves, 908 innings and a 3.82 earned run average, with 144 starts early and relief work in most seasons since. He pitched for the Cubs in 2025 at thirty-six. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
