He batted .296 across twenty years with 2,705 hits, which is 69th on the all-time list, and 37 home runs, which is roughly two a year. He led the American League with 200 hits in 1940 and had 190 or more in five seasons. Twice he got six hits in a nine-inning game, which very few have done.

He came from the Jersey shore, was called Doc because he had carried a country doctor's bag as a boy, and played center field for Connie Mack, for Boston beside Ted Williams, and for the Detroit club that won the 1945 World Series, in which he hit .379 at thirty-nine.

Five All-Star selections. He is one of the highest hit totals never to be elected to the Hall of Fame, and the five writers' ballots he appeared on gave him no more than twelve votes. He died in 1990, at eighty-five.
