In 2005 he batted .335, the best average in the National League, hit 46 home runs, and led the league with 199 hits and 50 doubles. Albert Pujols hit .330 that year and won the Most Valuable Player award. It is one of the best seasons a Cubs hitter has had and it did not come with a pennant race.
Fifteen seasons gave him 1,959 hits, 331 home runs, 1,078 runs batted in and a .281 average, with three Gold Gloves at first base and two All-Star selections. A wrist broken in a collision in April 2006 cost him most of the following season and some of the power afterward.
San Diego drafted him and traded him to Florida in the deal for Kevin Brown, and he was the first baseman for the 2003 World Series the Marlins won. Chicago had his seven best years. He got no votes in 2017.
