Dazzy Vance Marquee Hall of Fame 1955

b. March 4, 1891 · New York Yankees 1915, 1918, Pittsburgh Pirates 1915, Brooklyn Robins 1922–1931, Brooklyn Dodgers 1932, 1935, St. Louis Cardinals 1933–1934, Cincinnati Reds 1934

His first trial came in 1915, for the Pirates and the Yankees, and he went 0-4. He got two more games in 1918, then vanished from the major league record for three years. A bad arm was the reason, and accounts of what eventually fixed it differ. He pitched in the minors throughout.

Brooklyn took him in 1922. He was 31 and went 18-12, the first of seven consecutive seasons leading the league in strikeouts. In 1924 he went 28-6 with a 2.16 ERA, 262 strikeouts, and 30 complete games, took the pitching triple crown, and was named the National League's Most Valuable Player.

He pitched until he was 44 and finished with 197 wins and 2,045 strikeouts. Fourteen of his sixteen seasons came after he turned 31, and the whole Hall of Fame case for him rests on those. The vote came in 1955, twenty years after he last pitched.
