On July 4, 1983 he no-hit Boston at Yankee Stadium, striking out Wade Boggs to end it. He was Rookie of the Year in 1981 and had made 31 starts the year of the no-hitter. The following spring the club moved him to the bullpen to replace Goose Gossage, and he never started another game for them.

In 1986 he saved 46 games, which was more than any pitcher had saved in a season — Bruce Sutter and Dan Quisenberry had shared the record at 45 — and he did it with a 2.45 earned run average across 74 appearances. He saved 252 in all, 224 of them for the Yankees, second in the club's history to Mariano Rivera.

He pitched sixteen seasons and finished with three clubs in his last two years. He then spent eighteen seasons as San Francisco's pitching coach and was there for three World Series titles, which is a longer and more successful second career than most players get. He got two votes of 515 in 2001.
