Bergman rarely held an everyday job, but he remained useful for seventeen seasons. His largest workload did not come until 1989, at thirty-six, when he played 137 games for Detroit and collected career highs of 103 hits and 44 walks while hitting .268.
His career produced 690 hits, 100 doubles, 54 home runs, 289 runs batted in and a .258 average across 1,349 games. He played 866 games at first base and 106 in the outfield. Only once did he reach 300 at bats in a season.
Bergman began with the Yankees, played four seasons for Houston and moved to San Francisco during 1981. Detroit acquired him in 1984 and kept him through 1992, a nine-season stay that accounted for more than half his career. He played 87 games in his final year and died in 2015, at sixty-one.
