Clyde Shoun Marquee

b. March 20, 1912 · Chicago Cubs 1935–1937, St. Louis Cardinals 1938–1942, Cincinnati Reds 1942–1944, 1946–1947, Boston Braves 1947–1949, Chicago White Sox 1949

Clyde Shoun threw a no-hitter against Boston on May 15, 1944, missing a perfect game by one walk to the opposing pitcher. It was the highlight of a career otherwise spent mostly in relief — 454 appearances, only 85 of them starts.

He came up with the Chicago Cubs in 1935 and pitched for St. Louis and Cincinnati before the war took his 1945 season; he served in the army and returned in 1946. Boston and the White Sox had him at the end, and he saved 29 games across a career spent mostly waiting in a bullpen.

Born in Mountain City, Tennessee in 1912, Shoun finished 73-59 with 29 saves and a 3.91 earned run average. He died on his fifty-sixth birthday, March 20, 1968.
