b. August 31, 1954 · Oakland Athletics 1974–1976, Texas Rangers 1977–1978, Chicago White Sox 1978–1980, New York Mets 1980, Atlanta Braves 1981–1986, New York Yankees 1986–1988, 1990, California Angels 1989–1990

He was twenty when he hit .308 with 182 hits and 40 stolen bases for the 1975 Athletics and made the All-Star team, having won the World Series the year before as a rookie. He had been playing organized baseball for four years; Oakland found him on a California sandlot.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,884 hits, 164 home runs, 312 stolen bases, 334 doubles and a .278 average, with two All-Star selections. He hit three home runs in a game twice, six years apart, for two clubs.

He signed with Atlanta in 1981 for five years and $3.5 million, which was among the first large free-agent contracts an outfielder of his sort received. He died of prostate cancer in 2020, at sixty-five. The 1996 ballot gave him no votes.
