Los Angeles lost the first two games of the 1965 World Series, with Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax pitching them. Osteen started the third and threw a five-hit shutout, and the Dodgers won the next three of four and the Series. He was the third starter and that was the job.
Eighteen seasons gave him 196 wins against 195, a 3.30 earned run average, 3,460 innings, 140 complete games and 40 shutouts. He won 20 games in 1969 and again in 1972, and was chosen for three All-Star teams. Nine of the eighteen seasons were with the Dodgers.
Washington traded him to Los Angeles in December 1964 in the deal that sent Frank Howard the other way, which gave each club exactly what it needed. He pitched for seven clubs in all and was a pitching coach for another twenty years afterward. Two writers' ballots gave him two votes and then one.
