Born July 2, 1929
Wheeling, WV, USA
On April 17, 1953 Chuck Stobbs threw the pitch that Mickey Mantle hit out of Griffith Stadium and into a back yard on Oakdale Place. A Yankees publicist went out with a tape measure and returned with 565 feet, and the tape-measure home run entered the language.
Stobbs pitched fifteen seasons and lost more than he won, largely because he spent eight of them with Washington clubs that finished near the bottom. Boston had signed him out of high school and he won eleven games for them at twenty-one.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1929, Stobbs worked 1,920 innings with 65 complete games and finished 107-130. Stobbs died in July 2008, nine days after his seventy-ninth birthday.
