Charlie Maxwell Marquee

b. April 8, 1927 · Boston Red Sox 1950–1952, 1954, Baltimore Orioles 1955, Detroit Tigers 1955–1962, Chicago White Sox 1962–1964

Boston could not find a place for him and Baltimore gave up on him in a month, and then Detroit claimed him in May 1955 and he hit 28 home runs the next season at twenty-nine. He hit 31 in 1959 with 95 runs batted in, and he hit them so often in Sunday doubleheaders that the crowd started calling him Sunday Charlie.

Fourteen seasons gave him 856 hits, 148 home runs, 532 runs batted in and a .264 average, with two All-Star selections. Six seasons went by before he was a regular; his whole career as an everyday player fits between 1956 and 1961.

Chicago had him at the end, and he was out of the game at thirty-seven. He lived another sixty years in Michigan and died in December 2024, at ninety-seven. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
