Durbin entered the majors as a starter and absorbed a 9-16 record across 179 innings for Kansas City in 2001. By 2008 he had remade his role. Working exclusively from Philadelphia's bullpen, he appeared 71 times with a 2.87 earned run average, five wins and one save.
Fourteen seasons gave him a 43-47 record, five saves, 577 strikeouts and a 5.03 earned run average in 836 innings. He started 75 of his 456 appearances, completing three games. The relief years eventually supplied most of his outings, including a career-high 76 for Atlanta in 2012.
Durbin represented six organizations and had multiple stints with Cleveland and Philadelphia. Cleveland sent him to Arizona during 2004, and he missed the majors in 2005 before returning with Detroit. He closed with the Phillies in 2013, fourteen years after his Kansas City debut.
