He was 4-6 with Cleveland when the diagnosis came in June 2019 — chronic myeloid leukemia — and he was back in the bullpen on September 1, pitching in the pennant race, on a drug regimen he has stayed on since. He won the Roberto Clemente Award that season and Comeback Player of the Year the next.
Sixteen seasons have given him 112 wins against 105, a 4.22 earned run average, 1,687 innings and 1,696 strikeouts. His best year was 2017: 18-6 with a 3.29 earned run average and 226 strikeouts, and fourth place in the Cy Young voting.
He is Venezuelan and came to Cleveland from Philadelphia in the 2009 trade for Cliff Lee. He was never an All-Star. He is still pitching.
