Byerly's busiest season came for Washington in 1957, at thirty-seven. Working entirely in relief, he appeared 47 times, went 6-6 with six saves and posted a 3.13 earned run average across 95 innings.
Eleven seasons in all gave him a 22-22 record, 14 saves, 209 strikeouts and a 3.70 earned run average in 491 innings. He started only 17 of his 237 appearances, completing four games. His other 95-inning season came for St. Louis in 1945, when he made eight starts.
Byerly debuted with the Cardinals in 1943, then spent four seasons outside the majors before joining Cincinnati in 1950. Another three-year absence preceded his Washington stint. The Senators sent him to Boston during 1958, and he finished with two seasons for San Francisco. He died in 2012, at ninety-two.
