From 2005 to 2013 he started 32 or more games every year, which nobody else of that era did, and he threw 199 innings or more in eight of them. Sixteen seasons gave him 148 wins against 137, a 4.28 earned run average, 2,435 innings and a Gold Glove.

In the sixth game of the 2004 Championship Series, covering first base, he had the ball slapped out of his glove by Alex Rodriguez, who was called out for it after a conference of umpires. Boston won that game, the next one, and then the World Series.

He was traded to Cincinnati for Wily Mo Peña in 2006 and gave the Reds eight seasons and 105 wins. He played guitar in a band, wore his hair in cornrows for years, and pitched at 88 miles an hour by changing speeds. The 2023 ballot gave him one vote of 389.
