In 2007 he hit 30 home runs and stole 32 bases, one of the few second basemen to do both in a season. Seventeen seasons gave him 2,029 hits, 211 home runs, 951 runs batted in, 209 stolen bases and a .275 average, with four Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger and three All-Star selections.
Cleveland got him from Montreal in the trade for Bartolo Colón and then gave up on him at twenty-four; Cincinnati bought him for a player to be named and got eleven seasons and 1,774 hits. He played 1,586 games at second base for Cincinnati, more than Joe Morgan, Bid McPhee or anyone else in the club's history.
The fielding is what people watched: barehanded pickups, behind-the-back flips, throws begun before the ball arrived. The 2024 ballot gave him one vote of 385.
