Sixteen seasons gave him 1,176 hits, 196 doubles, 45 home runs, 514 runs batted in and a .254 average, with 821 games in the outfield and 540 at third base. He was traded four times in his final four seasons, ending with Brooklyn in 1957.

He managed the Cubs during their head-coach rotation system in the mid-1960s, then became general manager of the Athletics and later the Cubs, building the farm systems that produced their next generation of talent. He died in 2005, at eighty-four.
