Bill Robinson Marquee

b. June 26, 1943 · Atlanta Braves 1966, New York Yankees 1967–1969, Philadelphia Phillies 1972–1974, 1982–1983, Pittsburgh Pirates 1975–1982

The Yankees traded Clete Boyer to Atlanta to get him after the 1966 season and announced him as the successor to Mickey Mantle. He hit .196 in 1967, .240 in 1968 and .171 in 1969, and they sent him to the minor leagues.

He hit 25 home runs for the 1973 Phillies and then found a second career in Pittsburgh: 26 home runs and 104 runs batted in 1977 at thirty-four, 24 more home runs for the 1979 club that won the World Series. Sixteen seasons gave him 1,127 hits, 166 home runs, 641 runs batted in and a .258 average.

He played left field, first base and third base as the Pirates needed, and after retiring he spent twenty years as a hitting coach, including with the 1986 Mets. He died in his hotel room during a road trip in 2007, at sixty-four. The 1989 ballot gave him no votes.
