Bill Holland pitched for twenty-two seasons and completed 148 of the 197 games he is recorded as starting, a ratio that says as much about roster sizes in the Negro Leagues as about his arm, though it took a considerable arm to survive it.
He began with the Detroit Stars in 1920 and moved through the Chicago American Giants, the New York Lincoln Giants and the Brooklyn Royal Giants before joining the New York Black Yankees in 1932 and staying a decade. His All-Star selection came in 1939, at thirty-eight.
Born in Alexandria, Indiana in 1901, Holland compiled a 97-101 record with 933 strikeouts in the surviving record, and lived until December 3, 1973.
