Barney McCosky Marquee

b. April 11, 1917 · Detroit Tigers 1939–1942, 1946, Philadelphia Athletics 1946–1948, 1950–1951, Cincinnati Reds 1951, Cleveland Indians 1951–1953

He hit .340 with 200 hits and 19 triples in 1940, both the most in the league, at twenty-three. He hit .312 across his career and was considered one of the better pure hitters of his generation before the war interrupted him at the height of his ability.

The Navy took 1943, 1944 and 1945. He came back diminished but still productive, hitting well for Philadelphia in the late 1940s, though a back injury from a 1948 car accident limited him afterward. Eleven seasons gave him 1,301 hits, 214 doubles, 71 triples, 664 runs batted in and a .312 average.

He finished with Cleveland in 1953 at thirty-six. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1996, at seventy-nine.
