He came up at shortstop and played there for ten seasons, then moved to third base when he joined the Yankees in 2004. He led the American League in home runs five times and in runs five times, drove in 156 in 2007, and won the Most Valuable Player award in 2003, 2005 and 2007. He was an All-Star in fourteen seasons.
He finished with 3,115 hits, 696 home runs, 2,086 runs batted in and 329 stolen bases; only he and Willie Mays have 3,000 hits, 600 home runs and 300 steals. He batted .295 across 22 seasons, won ten Silver Sluggers and took two Gold Gloves at shortstop.
Major League Baseball suspended him for the whole of the 2014 season, and the record has no season for him between 2013 and 2015. He came back the next year and made his 3,000th hit a home run, on June 19, 2015. Four writers' ballots have carried his name, from 2022 through 2025, and he has drawn between 134 and 146 votes of about 390 cast.
