Lou Gehrig's 23rd Grand Slam

On August 20, 1938, New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig hit his 23rd career grand slam, setting a Major League record that would stand for 75 years.

Gehrig was in the final full season of his career; he would remove himself from the Yankees' lineup the following May, ending his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played, after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease that came to bear his name. He died in June 1941 at age 37.

Gehrig's grand slam record stood until September 2013, when Alex Rodriguez, also playing for the Yankees, hit his 24th career slam. The two remain the only players in Major League history to reach 20 career grand slams.
