A. J. Burnett threw a no-hitter for Florida in 2001 while walking nine batters, which is about as neat a summary of him as exists. The stuff was overwhelming and the command was a negotiation, and it kept him in the majors for seventeen years.
He struck out 2,513 hitters across 2,731 innings, led the American League in strikeouts in 2008, and won a World Series with the Yankees in 2009. Two spells in Pittsburgh bracketed a year in Philadelphia, and the second of them, at thirty-eight, brought his only All-Star selection.
Born in North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1977, Burnett finished 164-157 with a 3.99 earned run average and retired after the 2015 season.
