Dayton Marcos

The Marcos were one of the eight clubs that founded Rube Foster's Negro National League in 1920. They went 17-37 that season, dropped out, returned in 1926, went 6-36, and dropped out again. Two recorded seasons at 23-73, on surviving box scores rather than a complete count.

Dayton was much the smallest city in the league and the club could not meet the travel costs of a schedule built around Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis and Kansas City. That is the ordinary reason clubs of this kind failed, and it is worth stating plainly rather than leaving a bad record to speak for itself.

Candy Jim Taylor managed the 1920 club and went on to manage five other Negro Leagues teams over thirty years, including the Homestead Grays in their title years. No Hall of Famer played for the Marcos. It played out of Westwood Field.
