Steel Arm Davis got the name from pitching, and then stopped pitching. He threw for the Chicago Giants and the Detroit Stars in the early 1920s, moved to first base for the Chicago American Giants in 1927, and hit .321 from there for the rest of his career.

The American Giants were the club he was identified with, across two spells covering most of a decade, including the Negro National League pennants of 1926 and 1927. He was chosen for the first East-West All-Star game in 1933.

Born in Wortham, Texas in 1896, Davis collected 502 hits with 27 home runs and 293 runs batted in across 445 recorded games. He died on November 30, 1941, at forty-five.
