Toronto used him in the bullpen for four years before making him a starter at twenty-nine. He went 18-9 with a 3.28 earned run average for St. Louis in 2003, at thirty-six, and was an All-Star that summer.
Fifteen seasons gave him 132 wins against 116, a 4.19 earned run average, 2,216 innings and 1,480 strikeouts. He was traded from San Diego to St. Louis in 2001 for Ray Lankford and won 45 games in three and a half seasons there, pitching in the 2004 World Series.
He was from Houston, went to the University of Houston, and finished at home with the Astros in 2007. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
