Willie Jones Marquee

b. August 16, 1925 · Philadelphia Phillies 1947–1959, Cleveland Indians 1959, Cincinnati Redlegs 1959, Cincinnati Reds 1960–1961

He hit 25 home runs and drove in 88 for the 1950 Philadelphia club that won the pennant with the youngest roster in the league, and he played every inning of that World Series. He was twenty-four and had been the regular third baseman for two years already.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,502 hits, 190 home runs, 812 runs batted in, 755 walks and a .258 average, with two All-Star selections. He led National League third basemen in putouts five times and in fielding percentage four times and played 1,614 games at the position.

He was from South Carolina and was called Puddin' Head after a song of the period, which he disliked. He hit four doubles in a game in 1949, which twenty-odd players have done. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1983, at fifty-eight.
