Wilbur Cooper Marquee

b. February 24, 1892 · Pittsburgh Pirates 1912–1924, Chicago Cubs 1925–1926, Detroit Tigers 1926

Fifteen seasons gave him 216 wins against 178 with a 2.89 earned run average, 3,480 innings, 279 complete games and 35 shutouts. He won 202 of the games for Pittsburgh, ahead of Sam Leever and Babe Adams, and no one has passed him in the century since.

He won 20 or more four times — 24 in 1920, then 22, 23 and 20 — and led the National League in wins in 1921. He was a left-hander in a period that had few, and he could hit: 293 hits and a .239 average, which was often better than the men behind him managed.

Pittsburgh traded him to the Cubs after the 1924 season, and the Pirates won the World Series the following year without him. Nine writers' ballots between 1938 and 1955 got him to 11 votes at the peak, and fourteen committees have looked at him since without acting. He died in 1973, at eighty-one.
