He played 634 games between 1956 and 1963, 450 of them in the outfield, with 414 hits, 25 home runs and a .257 average, for four clubs and never as a regular for long. He said later that he had been a good player who was not good enough, which the record supports.

What he is in the Hall of Fame for is eighteen seasons, 1,281 wins against 1,125 losses and six first-place finishes. He had 138 games at Texas in 1973 and four at California in 1974 before Kansas City gave him five years, and then eleven at St. Louis, where he was general manager as well.

The style got a name, Whiteyball: speed, defense and pitching on a fast surface, in an era when everyone else was waiting for a home run. He appeared on seven Hall of Fame ballots. The Veterans Committee for managers and umpires elected him in 2010, and he lived to eighty-two.
