Born June 22, 1920
Philadelphia, PA, USA
He threw as hard as anyone in the American League in the late 1940s and had no idea where it was going: 97 walks in 1947 and 122 in 1948. He was chosen for the All-Star team in both of those years anyway, going 12-16 and then 8-15 for Washington clubs that finished seventh.
Fourteen seasons gave him 78 wins against 100, a 4.15 earned run average, 1,649 innings and 15 shutouts. He signed with Washington out of a Philadelphia high school at eighteen and pitched his first game before he turned nineteen.
The Navy took 1943, 1944 and most of 1945. He came back, was traded to Boston in 1949, and was traded back to Washington in 1952, which is where he had his last good year at thirty-three. He died in 2008, at eighty-seven. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
