Wally Pipp

Wally Pipp Marquee

b. February 17, 1893 · Detroit Tigers 1913, New York Yankees 1915–1925, Cincinnati Reds 1926–1928

He hit 12 home runs in 1916 and 9 in 1917, the most in the league both years, and he led it with 19 triples in 1924 while driving in 114 runs. He played first base for three straight pennant winners from 1921 to 1923 and for the club that won the 1923 World Series.

On June 2, 1925, Miller Huggins put Lou Gehrig at first base. Gehrig did not give it back for 2,130 games. Pipp finished the year with 41 hits in 62 games, was sold to Cincinnati, and hit .291 with 99 runs batted in for the 1926 Reds at thirty-three.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,941 hits, 311 doubles, 148 triples and a .281 average. The 1958 ballot gave him one vote of 266 and two committees have looked at him since. His name outlived his record: to be Wally Pipped is to lose a job you were only resting from.
