Wally Moses Marquee

b. October 8, 1910 · Philadelphia Athletics 1935–1941, 1949–1951, Chicago White Sox 1942–1946, Boston Red Sox 1946–1948

He hit .320 with 208 hits and 25 home runs for the 1937 Athletics and .345 the year before, and finished with 2,138 hits, 435 doubles, 110 triples, 821 walks and a .291 average across seventeen seasons. He led the American League in doubles in 1945 and triples in 1943.

Connie Mack sold him to the White Sox in 1942 for $25,000 and he spent five seasons there, and Boston bought him in 1946 in time for a World Series he hit .417 in.

He coached hitters for the Phillies, Reds, Yankees and Tigers for twenty years afterward and is credited by several notable hitters with the swing they used. Six writers' ballots gave him no more than seven votes. He died in 1990, on his eightieth birthday.
