Wally Gerber Marquee

b. August 18, 1891 · Pittsburgh Pirates 1914–1915, St. Louis Browns 1917–1928, Boston Red Sox 1928–1929

Gerber's best offensive season came for St. Louis in 1923. He played all 154 games, collected 170 hits, scored 85 runs and drove in 62 while hitting .281. It was one of three consecutive seasons in which he topped 160 hits, a durable stretch at the center of the Browns' infield.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,309 hits, 172 doubles, 46 triples, 476 runs batted in and a .257 average. He played 1,447 games at shortstop, compared with only 50 at second and third base combined. His 1,522 major-league games included twelve seasons with St. Louis.

Pittsburgh introduced him to the majors in 1914, but his career settled only after he joined the Browns in 1917. He received Most Valuable Player votes in 1923, 1924 and 1926. Boston acquired him during 1928, and he finished there in 1929. Gerber died in 1951, at fifty-nine.
