He stole 110 in 1985, 107 in 1986 and 109 in 1987, and led the National League every year from 1985 through 1990. The unanimous Rookie of the Year vote in 1985 gave him all 120 points and all 24 first-place ballots. He finished with 752 stolen bases, sixth in the game's history.

He was caught only 25 times in 1985 and 14 times in 1986, so the volume was not recklessness. He hit .264 across thirteen seasons with 1,425 hits and 89 triples, and he walked 477 times, which is what a leadoff man of that speed needed and barely got.

He missed the 1985 World Series because an automatic tarpaulin rolled over his leg during the League Championship Series. In July 1993 he threw a lit firecracker into a crowd outside Dodger Stadium, injuring three people including a two-year-old, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and never played for the Mets again. The 2003 ballot gave him three votes of 496.
