Vean Gregg Marquee

b. April 13, 1885 · Cleveland Naps 1911–1914, Boston Red Sox 1914–1916, Philadelphia Athletics 1918, Washington Senators 1925

He went 23-7 as a twenty-six-year-old rookie in 1911 with a 1.80 earned run average, the lowest in the American League — Walter Johnson's was 1.90 that year — and followed it with 20-13 and 20-13. He struck out 125 or more in each of those three seasons and completed 71 games in them.

Then his arm went. He was traded to Boston in the middle of 1914, won nine games there in two and a half years, and was out of the majors after 1916. He came back with the 1918 Athletics for one season, went to the Pacific Coast League, and turned up again with Washington in 1925, at forty, seven years after his previous major-league game.

Eight seasons gave him 92 wins against 63, a 2.70 earned run average, 1,393 innings, 105 complete games and 14 shutouts. He was a plasterer from Washington state before baseball and ran a sporting goods store in Hoquiam after. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1964, at seventy-nine.
